Runner of the Year

Keely Maguire School: Triton Year: Junior
The Georgetown resident has dominated courses in every corner of Cape Ann League territory, and Eastern Mass for that matter, for the past two years ... The junior went undefeated in every Division 3 meet she entered ... Repeated as EMass Division 3 champion with an 18:34 effort ... Finished second in state Division 2 championship race ... Set a new course record (18:05) at Bradley Palmer to repeat as CAL champion ... "It was the best race I have ever seen her run," said Triton cross country coach, Joe Colbert, about Maguire's CAL-Open record-breaking effort ... Maguire, who also runs indoor and outdoor track, finished fourth out of 85 at the Brown Invitational in Rhode Island ... Fought off strep throat to finish 22nd (18:40.9) at the Northeast Foot Locker Regional 5K in Bronx ... The three-year cross country starter hopes to pursue CC and track in college as well.
 
Keara Thomas School: The Governor's Academy Year: Senior
The school's name has changed, but Thomas winning every race she's entered for GA has remained the same ... The four-year cross country varsity starter set a record-setting pace at Roxbury Latin on Nov. 3 to repeat as the Independent School League champion ... The Whittier Middle School graduate also defended her Division 3 New England Prep School Cross Country championship title on Nov. 11 by setting another course record at the Pomfret School in Connecticut; the victory capped off an unbeaten four-year ISL career ... The Haverhill resident keeps herself busy year-round as the former Junior Olympic athlete also dances in the winter and runs track in the spring.
 
Maura Welch School: Newburyport Year: Sophomore
The Honor Roll student is a two-year varsity starter ... Repeated as a Cape Ann League All-Star this season placing 10th (20:17) in the CAL Open ... The sophomore consistently led the way for the Newburyport girls team this season helping the Clippers qualify for the All-State meet for the 14th year in a row ... Welch was her team's co-MVP ... She cited assistant coaches, Amy Haas and Betsy Suda, as role models ... Only a sophomore, Welch is already looking forward to running cross country and track in college.
 
Alanna Poretta School: Pentucket Year: Freshman
Pentucket's freshman sensation and team MVP finished fifth at the EMass Division 3 meet ... The honor roll student crossed the line eighth in the Cape Ann League Open to become a CAL All-Star in her first year ... The Groveland resident placed 16th in the Division 2 All-State meet and was the second quickest freshman in the field ... Poretta cites legendary runner Steve Prefontaine as her personal role model as well as her coaches and parents who "have helped me succeed and do well thus far and have always encouraged me to do well," she said.
 
April O'Brien School: Pentucket Year: Sophomore
Like Poretta, the Sachems' consistent No. 2 runner and high honor roll student listed Prefontaine as her personal role model ... The Bradford resident listed winning her team's Coaches Award as her personal fall highlight ... A promising young runner, O'Brien missed All-Star status by just three places, finishing 13th in the CAL Open with a time of 20:38 in her first year competing in cross country ... O'Brien made the Daily News All-Star page last winter for indoor track; the multi-sport athlete keeps busy during the spring by playing lacrosse.
 
Eric McDonald School: Pentucket Year: Senior
Pentucket's three-year starter and No. 1 runner went undefeated in the regular season in dual meets ... The two-time defending Cape Ann League champion just missed the three-peat after finishing second in the CAL Open meet this fall ... However, his time in the CAL Open was enough to repeat as an All-Star ... Placed third in the Division 2 All-State meet ... Won the EMass Division 3 championship by an 18 second margin with a 16:23 effort ... CAL Runner of the Year.
 
Andrew Gallant School: Pentucket Year: Senior
The Merrimac resident is as good in the classroom as he is on the trails carrying a 3.0 GPA ... The Sachems' No. 2 runner all season noted his third place finish at the Newburyport/Georgetown meet as one of his fall highlights ... Gallant, who plans to attend college next fall and run cross country, finished 14th in the CAL Open ... The Coaches Award winner listed his father, who is also a runner, as his role model ... "I grew up going to races and now I want to beat his times," Gallant said of his father's efforts.
 
Ben Hills School: Pentucket Year: Senior
The three-year varsity starter and one of coach Darell Cox's most consistent runners. ... Posted a 19th place finish at the CAL Open, which he listed as his fall highlight, and helped Pentucket's boys team finish third overall ... Consistently the Sachems' No. 3 runner throughout the regular season... The West Newbury resident plans on attending North Shore Community College in the fall.
 
Taylor Roberts School: Newburyport Year: Senior
The Clippers four-year varsity captain is a leader in the classroom as well as on the cross country team; the senior is a consistent honor roll student with a 3.7 GPA ... Voted his team's MVP, Roberts was 'Port's No. 1 runner all season ... Came close to his mile goal of 4:35 with a 4:49 effort this fall; best two-mile time of 10:18 ... Roberts repeated as a CAL All-Star after finishing fourth with his best 5K performance of the season (16:44) ... Roberts named Clipper alum, Ryan Spinney, as his personal role model.
 
Brian Cosgrove School: Triton Year: Sophomore

Though only a sophomore, the Vikings' Cosgrove is now an All-Star after placing eighth with a time of 17:01 at the Cape Ann League Open ... Cosgrove heads a young, but extremely promising Triton boys squad where he consistently placed as Triton's top runner ... Finished a Triton best, 78th, at the Emass Division 3 Championship meet ... Finished an impressive 38th at the Brown Invitational (5K) in Rhode Island early last month with a time of 17:44.
